Description/Job Summary

One Step Away is Greater Philadelphia’s street magazine with a mission to create meaningful income and personal growth opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty while raising awareness and advocating for social justice in our community. One Step Away debuted in December 2009 and has been publishing monthly since. Every month, One Step Away works with approximately 60 individuals as they strive to break the cycle of homelessness.

One Step Away is looking for an intern for the Spring 2020 semester. The internship will focus on event planning and fundraising for our 10th Annual Champions Celebration event. This internship provides students a hands-on look at the event planning process, and the numerous components involved with managing an event from conception to execution.

The One Step Away intern will learn all aspects of running a street magazine, including, fundraising, event planning, donor development, and volunteer management. While the One Step Away internship provides an introduction to the aspects of running a street magazine, the main focus of the spring internship will be event planning.

The primary focus of this internship will be to assist with the planning and implementation of the 10th Annual Champions Celebration fundraiser and will include the following responsibilities:

  • Soliciting silent auction & raffle donations
  • Creating acknowledgment letters
  • Selling individual event tickets
  • Developing of an event committee
  • Contacting and booking celebrity appearances
  • Soliciting corporate sponsorships
  • Organizing event materials
  • Identifying event graphics and, in conjunction with Graphic Designer, designing event collateral

Special skills: Candidates should have an interest in fundraising and event planning, with a special interest in human services and the issues of homelessness and affordable housing. Candidates must also be energetic, self-motivated, and flexible. Candidates must possess a High School Diploma/GED and a valid driver's license.

Required Experience

  • Former event planning and nonprofit experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas are a plus.
  • Candidates should have an interest in fundraising and event planning, with a special interest in human services and the issues of homelessness and affordable housing.
  • Candidates must also be energetic, self-motivated, and flexible.
  • Candidates must possess a High School Diploma/GED and a valid driver's license

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Required Qualifications

  • Must know how to proficiently used Macs & PCs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint.
  • Knowledge with Adobe Creative Cloud, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop a plus.
  • Knowledge of Philadephia.
  • Valid driver's license.

Internship Requirements:

  • Duration: 5 months
  • Start Date: January-May 2020

  • $1,000 stipend
