Peer Specialist

Seeking a part-time peer specialist for all male residential Mental Health treatment facility.  CPS preferred.  Candidate with lived mental health experience preferred.  Daylight work schedule, which included weekends.
Essential Duties and Functions

  1. Responsibilities: Life Skills and Educational Counseling
    1. Person In Recovery (PIR) Chores/House Maintenance
      1. Support PIRs in maintaining community and program space
      2. Support PIRs in maintaining their daily schedules
    2. Food and Household Goods
      1. Assist, monitor and support in meal planning, food inventory, the creation of a grocery shopping list and grocery shopping as assigned
      2. Support and assist meal preparation
      3. Support implementation of Nutrition Program
      4. Monitor and assist at mealtime
    3. Medication and Health Management
      1. Assist and support with education on medications
    4. Assist PIRs in conflict resolution
    5. Provide crisis intervention
    6. Participate in Program milieu
    7. Support PIR in developing an Advance Directive if desired
    8. Attend and/or facilitate any assigned educational groups and meetings
    9. Actively support PIRs in facilitating socialization and recreation activities
    10. Assist PIR with treatment work
    11. Support PIR’s recovery efforts and attainment of Recovery Capital
    12. Transport PIR to approved appointments and/or support meetings using agency vehicle
  2. Document educational groups and any resident contact
  3. Conduct, facilitate and document fire drills as assigned
  4. Participate in Team Support (Case Consultation) Mtgs., staff mtgs. and supervision as assigned
  5. Read log daily and document in log when the shift begins, every 30 minutes and when leaving at the end of the shift
  6. Engage participants in a trusting and supportive relationship, providing emotional support with professional boundaries as needed
  7. Provide assistance and support to participants in their development and use of WRAP and Safety Plans
  8. Support the individualized recovery plan developed with the participant, with the aim of achieving and maintaining health and emotional well-being as well as participating in recovery experiences
  9. Assist the participant to reach the goals he has set in the recovery plan. The following activities are considered essential in helping the PIR to achieve goals:
    1. Incorporating self-help techniques into daily living experiences and problem-solving activities
    2. Role modeling adaptive styles of behaviors
    3. Practice and encourage advocacy activities to enable self-advocacy efforts
    4. Participation in the PIR’s development of an informal support network
    5. Mentor appropriate use of community resources
    6. Facilitate linkage to community-based Peer Support as indicated in the individual plan
  10. Provide emergency coverage for next shift when necessary
  11. Other duties as assigned by Director to insure continuity of care
Job Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
  1. Valid driver’s license
  2. Criminal clearances
  3. FBI clearance, as needed
  4. All trainings required by licensure
  5. High School Graduate or G.E.D.
  6. Personal Recovery/Life Experience accepted, 3 or more years preferred
  7. Peer Specialist Certification preferred
