Description/Job Summary

Peer support specialists will meet with clients individually and provide group discussion in principals of recovery.  Peers provide a unique service to program residents with their lived experience in mental health and/or forensic services.

Glassport LTSR is seeking a part-time peer support specialist - Saturday and Sunday 10a-5p and one weekday.


Responsibilities: Life Skills and Educational Counseling

    1. Person In Recovery (PIR) Chores/House Maintenance
      • Support PIRs in maintaining community and program space
      • Support PIRs in maintaining their daily schedules
    2. Food and Household Goods
      • Assist, monitor and support in meal planning, food inventory, the creation of a grocery shopping list and grocery shopping as assigned
      • Support and assist meal preparation and clean up
      • Support implementation of Nutrition Program
      • Monitor and assist at mealtime
    3. Assist and support with education on medications and symptom management
    4. Assist PIRs in conflict resolution
    5. Provide crisis intervention
    6. Participate in Program milieu
    7. Support PIR in developing an Advance Directive if desired
    8. Attend and/or facilitate any assigned educational groups and meetings
    9. Actively support PIRs in facilitating socialization and recreation activities
    10. Assist PIR with treatment work
    11. Support PIR’s recovery efforts and attainment of Recovery Capital
    12. Transport PIR to approved appointments and/or outings using agency vehicle
    13. Document educational groups and any resident contact
    14. Conduct, facilitate and document fire drills as assigned
    15. Participate in residents’ Monthly Treatment team mtgs., staff mtgs. and supervision as assigned
    16. Read emails daily, communicate with program staff for updates on resident progress
    17. Engage participants in a trusting and supportive relationship, providing emotional support with professional boundaries as needed
    18. Provide assistance and support to participants in their development and use of WRAP and Safety Plans
    19. Support the individualized recovery plan developed with the participant, with the aim of achieving and maintaining health and emotional well-being as well as participating in recovery experiencesAssist the participant to reach the goals he has set in the recovery plan.
    20. Provide emergency coverage for next shift when necessary
    21. The following activities are considered essential in helping the PIR to achieve goals:
    • Incorporating self-help techniques into daily living experiences and problem-solving activities
    • Role modeling adaptive styles of behaviors
    • Practice and encourage advocacy activities to enable self-advocacy efforts
    • Participation in the PIR’s development of an informal support network

Required Experience

Peer supports self-identify as persons with lived experience in mental health, substance abuse and/or forensics and are willing to share their experiences with residents to promote symptom management, recovery and overall wellness.

Required Education

HS or GED minimum 

Required Qualifications

Certified peer specialist preferred, mental health and/or forensic lived experience preferred

Program Summary

RHD Glassport LTSR is a long-term structured residential program serving eligible adult males who are residents of Allegheny County and have been diagnosed with serious mental illness and substance use disorder, or dually-diagnosed with an intellectual disability.  Residents may also have a forensic history.
