Description/Job Summary

The RHD Shining Through unit seeks a Behavior Specialist to provide clinically oriented behavior support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or mental health diagnosis. The Behavior Specialist will work closely with our clinical, programmatic, residential and day support staff to develop holistic behavioral treatment plans that consider thoughts, feelings and behaviors of our participants within an interpersonal and systematic context. This systemic approach requires participation on a multidisciplinary team and the training of staff, families and caretakers. The Behavior Specialist conducts their work with respect to the division’s mission and RHD values.

Responsibilities/Duties

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive functional assessments of presenting issues (e.g. aggression, self-injurious behavior, property destruction, law-offending behavior (sexual or otherwise) etc.
  • Collect and evaluate resident’s/day participant’s medical, familial, psychological, interpersonal and behavioral data (historic and current).
  • Observe the resident/day participant in various settings for the purposes of developing a clinically oriented behavioral support plan. It is imperative that observations of the resident’s behavior and interactions with peers and direct care staff occur both in the home and the community.
  • Discuss with staff the potential behavior targets, and what strategies they have found to be effective/ineffective. Staff from alternating shifts should be included to obtain a comprehensive view of the individual.
  • Collaborate with the resident/day participant, their family, and residential, operational and clinical staff for the purposes of developing a clinically oriented behavioral support plan. Behavioral Support plans must be based on a functional assessment and support the resident through the inclusion of positive, affirming practices and may not include restraint procedures as support strategies.
  • Collaborate with therapist to prioritize and refine/alter the list of target behaviors and hypothesize underlying dynamics of each targeted behavior to ensure suggested interventions do not conflict/counteract the SO treatment plan.
  • Conduct trainings related to implementation of behavioral support and crisis intervention plans for the participant, family members, and staff.
  • Implement activities and strategies identified in the behavioral support plan.
  • Monitor implementation of the clinically oriented behavior support plan providing revisions and trainings as needed.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments (annually at minimum) to assess attainment of outcomes; communicate results to team members and adjust the plan as indicated.
  • Provide quarterly behavioral updates to be used for psychiatric medication reviews.
  • Provide this information, including graphs and pertinent data, to the Program Specialist one week prior to the scheduled psychiatric appointment.
  • Work closely with members of the administrative and clinical team members regarding the plan’s development and implementation. Provide support of the clinical philosophy, and maintenance of a safe and therapeutic environment for the resident, staff and overall community.
  • Cooperate and communicate with inter-disciplinary team members to ensure all components of consumers’ program work in partnership.
  • Collaborate with inter-disciplinary team members involved in individuals’ focused support services relative to opportunity and community living.
  • Provide authorized Behavioral Support Service (BSS) as outlined in individuals’ ISPs.
  • Provide emergency consultation in crisis situations.
  • Attend and actively participate in team, clinical and outside meetings and supervision as directed.
  • Attend trainings as needed.
  • Model team approach by remaining consistent with plan and intervention.
  • Model and provide guidance to consumers with regards to independence and interpersonal skills.
  • Track and report billable hours and ensure that hours do not extend beyond approved ISP units.
  • Provide justification for number of units or an increase in units requested for behavior support in an individual’s ISP.
  • Support the clinical design and therapeutic milieu of the program.
  • Represent the program in a professional manner and model leadership and boundaries with staff and consumers at all times.
  • All other duties as requested.

Required Experience

Education/Experience

Qualifications include:

  • Three years of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities a plus, as is coursework or experience working with people who have special mental health needs and/or have a dual diagnosis.
  • One year of Experience completing Functional Behavioral Assessments as well as implementing Behavior Support Plans guided by Positive Behavior Supports.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) a plus.
  • Experience using ABLLs, VB-MAPP and/or PEAK assessment and intervention tools a plus.
  • Experience working directly with individuals with problematic sexual behaviors a plus.
  • Complete upon Hire Bureau of Autism Services (BAS) SPeCTRUM on-line training in Systematic Skill Building (Nine Modules).
  • Complete upon hire BAS Systematic Skill Building Training (Seven Modules).
  • Complete upon hire BAS On-line Behavior Specialist training.
  • Complete upon hire BAS Goal Attainment Scale Certification.
  • Complete upon hire Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) training.
  • Complete upon hire BAS Behavior Specialist Training 101 (two modules).


Required Education

Education/Experience

Qualifications include:

  • Master’s Degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Social Work, Counseling, Education or closely related Human Service field from an accredited university.
