Description/Job Summary

The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) provides peer support services, serves as an advocate for participants, shares coping skills, and provides recovery information for participants.   The CPS performs a wide range of tasks to assist participants in regaining control over their own recovery process.  This includes but is not limited to the development of natural supports, social interactions in the community, managing of symptoms that challenge wellness in an individual.The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) provides peer support services, serves as an advocate for participants, shares coping skills, and provides recovery information for participants.   The CPS performs a wide range of tasks to assist participants in regaining control over their own recovery process.  This includes but is not limited to the development of natural supports, social interactions in the community, managing of symptoms that challenge wellness in an individual.

Responsibilities/Duties

  1. Serve as a member of the assigned program site to provide supportive peer services to participants living at the site.
  2. Role model wellness and recovery.
  3. Identify recovery goals to assist participants with managing interpersonal relationships and community integration activities.
  4. Partner with Direct Support Staff assisting participants with skill development in areas such as:
  1. Maintaining a clean living environment,
  2. Completing laundry,
  3. Meal preparation (planning, grocery shopping, and cooking, etc.),
  4. Managing personal physical health,
  5. Managing personal mental health, and
  6. Formulating and achieving recovery goals.
  1. Submit daily documentation of engagement services to UMOJA Supervisor and Site Program Director.
  2. Use Motivational Interviewing in individual and groups settings.
  3. Lead the implementation of WRAPs with participants.
  4. Help plan, coordinate, and participate in community, social, and recreational activities for individuals and group participation.
  5. Share recovery – oriented educational materials.
  6. Attend program site staff meetings.
  7. Meet weekly with UMOJA Supervisor.
  8. Effectively communicate any pertinent information to Site Program Director.
  9. Complete all other assigned tasks as designated by the Site Program Director.

Required Experience

At least one (1) to three (3) years working with others in Mental Health Recovery (volunteer work will be considered)

Required Education

HS Diploma/GED, Bachelor’s Preferred
