Job Summary
 
RHD Kailo Haven is a Safe Haven for 40 chronically homeless men most of which have the co-occurring disorders of mental health Illness and drug and alcohol addiction. The DSP worker is directly responsible for creating an environment that reflects our mission while upholding the RHD values. The DSP assist as needed with information,  medication, minor cleaning in the kitchen and common areas, interacting with outside agencies, documenting  services received and other things of importance.  
 
Essential Duties and Functions:
 
Maintain a Safe and Open Environment
  • Get to know the residents and the property. Engagement, building trust, and gaining a good rapport is the key to a successful professional relationship.
  • Intervene in crisis situation and document all critical incidents (Incident Report must be completed within 24 hours of the incident).
  • Conduct safety checks (rounds) every hour, “in and out of the facility” to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Participate in shift changes, fire drills, and Shelter-in-Place drills along with any other evacuation or emergency incidents to ensure the safety of our residents and staff.
  • Ensure that the kitchen and the common areas are clean and disinfected.
  • Other duties assigned by direct supervisor as needed.
  Health and Wellbeing
  • Provide Medication Monitoring (monitor residents taking medication, counting narcotic medication and reviewing medication books for accuracy). Let the residents know when their medications are low and if they have refills. Assist as needed with reordering medications, making doctor appointments, understanding what the medications are for and their possible side effects.
  • Escort residents to appointments as needed utilizing the company van or public trans.
  • Heat/Serve meals to consumers at scheduled times. Label, date, and put away leftovers, wash dishes, wipe down counters and damp mop the floors.
  • Intervene in disputes before they become crisis’s.
  • Provide supportive interventions to encourage resident’s effort to accomplish tasks and be available to meet with residents individually as needed.
  • Encourage residents to adhere to their recovery plans, be active in in-house activities as well as outside activities, and to focus on housing
  • Model healthy behaviors always treating people with respect.
  • Identify areas for improvement throughout the program and in staff development.
  • Attend the mandatory all staff meetings and trainings listed in our training plan.
  • Strive to implement the RHD Values in the workplace.
  Documentation
  • Provide orientation and intake paperwork with  participants and assist volunteers and  volunteer groups
  • Answer phone and document messages, activities, observations and other information in logbook, related forms, shift summaries, and other documentation
  • Utilize Microsoft Office, Lawson System, Shared Drive, Avatar, Progress notes, etc. and complete reporting requirements submitting necessary data within a timely fashion.
  • Manage the completion and submission of the daily census
  • Maintain resident files and records
  • Facilitate community meetings and groups for the residents.
  • Read the communication log and shift reports in the beginning of your shift
  • Enter information into HMIS and AVATAR EHR’s
  
Working conditions
 
Special working conditions include resolving conflictual interactions, working with individuals while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, reporting to external organizations, and other RHD departments. Program participants have a wide range of personal challenges that require a calm, measured approach. We accept and work with them where they are at in their own personal recovery journey.


Required Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with homeless people preferred
  • Ability to read and write clearly. Excellent communication skills
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record
  • Computer literate and able to use our data management systems
  • Ability to work in a team environment to support and effectively manage a safe haven as well as addressing residents’ individual needs.

Physical requirements
 
The job requires a lot of interaction with the residents and outside agencies. Which includes walking up three flights of steps eight times per shift, light cleaning,  lifting under 30 pounds, etc.
