Employees and consumers have the right to live and/or work in an environment that affirms their fundamental dignity as human beings and does not insult or demean them. Companion job duties include, but are not limited to: assisting people with day to day support needs, helping them pursue community based interests, Maximizing independence, medication administration, scheduling and attending doctor appointments, expanding their circle of friendships, budgeting money, being a positive role model, and exploring leisure opportunities.

In exchange for sharing a home and life with a person supported by RHD, companions are compensated with a competitive salary, paid rent and utilities, food allowance, and a comprehensive benefits package. Companions are typically off work for 6 hours of the day (usually 9:00 am to 3:00 pm) Monday through Friday and have 48 hours off each weekend (usually 3:00 pm on Friday to 3:00 pm on Sunday), although companion may choose to work the weekends for additional compensation.

Position requires someone that is positive, responsible, flexible, patient, supportive, and person-centered. Must have a desire to support consumers with developmental disabilities in a residential setting, a sincere interest in the people they will be working with and their well-being, an open minded and flexible personality, the ability to be a good listener, and the ability to gently and positively divert individuals from problematic behaviors without being dictatorial.

Companions will possess a High School Diploma or equivalency. Prior to assuming sole responsibility for the provision of support to any individuals served at RHD-MO, candidates must successfully complete all required trainings, show proof of a valid driver's license and insurance on a vehicle, and agree to allow the agency to complete a criminal and social services background check. RHD provides opportunities for potential companions to spend time with people supported on the front end to ensure a good match occurs.
