Description/Job Summary

Family Practice & Counseling Network is seeking a Medical Assistant/Medical Receptionist to perform duties at our new COVID prevention site and the health centers.  Medical Assistant/Receptionist will uphold the health center's mission by assuring that patients receive health care that is competent, caring, and meets with a high degree of satisfaction.



    1. Perform duties at the COVID Prevention Site and FPCN site as assigned.
    2. Assist in the courteous and efficient management of connecting clients and guests who are physically in the office and those individuals who are on the phone with the appropriate services and/or staff in a timely and accurate manner.
    3. Initiate services for primary care clients which involve: signing-in, updating basic demographic information, confirming payment method, validating health insurance coverage, and preparing necessary paper work. Additional services may be warranted depending on the client’s status new or established and if the client seeks more specialized services.
    4. Manage phone calls coming in to the front desk by directing calls to appropriate staff members and facilitating documentation of messages (i.e. electronic, hand-written).
    5. Schedule appointments for primary care clients.
    6. Call clients shortly before their scheduled visit to remind them to keep their appointment.
    7. Constantly update and utilize pertinent information about the health insurance carriers that the Practice accepts.
    8. Insure all patient billing forms are correct, accurate and batched according to the patient sign in sheet on a daily basis.
    9. Initiate and further assist in fee assessing applicable clients, which includes utilizing the Practice’s sliding fee schedule. Perform cash collection and reconciliation of all patient fees.
    10. Maintain client charts.
    11. Provide additional clerical tasks: filing, typing, faxing, and copying documents
    12. Maintain client confidentiality in both written and verbal formats.
    13. Initiate the enforcement of the Practice’s Late Policy for primary care clients.
    14. Possess exemplary knowledge of and enforce all Practice policies and procedures that impact the work of the receptionist and front desk. Adhere to OSHA guidelines.


    Direct Patient Care:

    1. Prepares the environment to assure that the all necessary equipment/information is available for effective and efficient care during the visit.
    2. Greets the patient and helps the patients feel prepared for their visit.
    3. Completes vital signs, weight and height, EKGs, eye and hearing exams, as assigned.
    4. Assures that all documentation is correct and complete.
    5. Works with the CRNP to provide comprehensive care.
    6. Maintain client charts
    7. Initiates and performs HIV test, including consent.
    8. Completes all necessary paperwork.
    9. Assists with therapeutic procedures.
    10. Prepares and administers medications as ordered.
    11. Collects and preserves bodily fluids, blood, and other specimens. 
    12. Performs simple STAT screening tests on collected specimens.

    Indirect Patient Care:

    1. Prepares forms for visit.
    2. Prepares and forwards requests for referrals as assigned which may involve all or some of the following: obtaining health insurance authorization, completing referral form, making referral appointment for patient, coordinating on-site Transportation Services, and notifying patient when referral is complete.
    3. Prepares and forwards request for medication refills as assigned.

    General laboratory services:

    1. Performs a variety of standard lab tests with standing orders from primary care providers (including but not limited to blood sugars, urine dip, etc.).
    2. Prepares laboratory specimens to assure the correct information.
    3. Completes all paperwork and forms related to the handling of specimens and document all actions in the patient record.


    1. Assists the primary care providers and clinical nurse in collecting information related to triaging patients.


    1. Consistently practices universal precautions.
    2. Performs additional duties related to the responsibilities of the Medical Assistant as directed by supervisor.
    3. Substitutes for Medical Assistants at other practices, when deemed necessary by supervisor.

    Required Experience

    • One (1) year in a Primary Health Care facility

    Required Education

    • High School Diploma/GED
    • Medical Assisting Diploma from accredited school

    Required Qualifications

    • Certified Medical Assistant Certificate 
    • Previous experience with an Electronic Practice Management system
    • Good intermediate mathematics skills
    • Familiarity with medical terminology
    • Computer Competency with proficiency in word processing
    • Highly reliable and dependable
    • Exemplary skill at managing multiple tasks simultaneously
    • High level of patience, courtesy, and concentration
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills
